Grandma on the protein shakes!
Share
In this blog post I will take you along in a personal story of mine (Lars, the founder of Faunus Nutrition).
Personally one of our most beautiful success stories. Almost as long as I can remember I know that my grandmother goes through life with many physical complaints and low energy level.
When I started looking into this more, I found out that her daily food intake is a bit on the low side. A sandwich and half a piece of meat on a daily basis is already a lot for her. In other words, the chance that the complaints my grandmother experienced could largely be related to a deficiency of important nutrients.
Grandma was malnourished.
I have started to delve into the real interests of proteins, among other things, what is the function of proteins besides building muscle mass for bodybuilders. This function is much broader. I will save all the functions of proteins for another blog, but I will share a few important and the most well-known ones at the bottom of this blog with you.
Because my grandmother received far too few essential nutrients with her daily diet, this led to unpleasant complaints for her. Low energy, joint and muscle pain and other physical ailments. Time to tackle her diet!
Because elderly people, including my grandmother, often have little appetite or can't eat much, adding an extra meal is quickly too much. That is why I put a bag of protein powder at my grandmother's, got her rice milk and said, are you going to use this every day? Our protein powder is much easier to digest because of the fermentation process, which makes it easy on the stomach for my grandmother. In addition, the fermentation process also contributes to her intestinal health because of the natural (good) bacteria that are released from fermentation.
The rice milk makes it a little sweeter for her, like a dessert!
Doctor visiting
After a little over a month, my grandma already started to notice a difference in her energy level and how she felt. But this is where the story gets even better! After my grandma took the protein daily, the doctor came back after two months to check her kidney values (Grandma's MOT😜).
My grandmother's kidney values had improved so much that even the doctor was surprised. 'What have you been taking, ma'am?'' .
Now I say to grandma, it is not a magic potion that I am giving you, but these are important substances that our body needs.
This beautiful example not only shows how important nutrients such as proteins are for the elderly, who lose a lot of muscle mass and get little nutrition and building materials. But also what a difference one protein shake can make!
My girlfriend's grandmother
Not only my grandma uses our protein powder daily, my girlfriend's grandma, grandma Jose, also uses it now!
Grandma Jose suffers a lot from her COPD complaints. Where she used to cycle all over the country (all of North Holland), a round trip to the village had recently become too much. Grandma Jose has also been using Faunus protein for a while now, she notices that she experiences more energy and can pick up her old hobby again! Her lungs recover faster from and during the bike ride and she can now slowly build it up again!
Elderly and malnutrition
Elderly people generally have less appetite. Initially, no problem, they generally burn less. Only when the intake of food is so little, and the important nutrients are no longer being consumed, can this cause problems. For example, think of complaints such as:
- Poor wound healing
- Low in energy
- Hair, nail and skin problems
- Muscle or joint pain
- Weak bones
- Weak immune system
The interests of proteins.
As promised, I will briefly list the most important functions of proteins, not only for athletes, but for everyone. Proteins contribute to, among other things:
- Construction and repair of (muscle and skin) tissue
- Strengthening the immune system
- Hormone production (hormonal balance)
- Energy source
- Oxygen transport
- Strong bones
Conclusion
Just like what I always say to both grandmas, it is not a magic powder after which you can do everything again, but it is the number one nutrient that your body needs. The building block of your body, it is not a miracle cure, and you certainly need other important nutrients, besides the proteins. But it does show that one protein shake a day, can make such a difference for the elderly!
