Organic food: what does that actually mean?
Organic food is becoming increasingly popular and that is certainly not without reason. The Netherlands is in third place in Europe, but we are still a long way from Germany and Denmark. Organic food offers many benefits for both our health and the environment. But what exactly is organic food? In this blog we will go into that in more detail.
What is Organic Food?
Organic food is produced in a sustainable and natural way without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilizers or genetic modification (GMO-free). The welfare of the animals and the environment is paramount when producing organic food.
Benefits of organic food
Organic food offers numerous advantages over conventional food. Firstly, organic food contains little to no pesticides and fertilizers. This not only makes it healthier for humans and animals, but also better for the environment.
Organic food also generally contains more nutrients and fewer residues. Organic food also often tastes better because it is produced and matured in a natural way, 'purely natural'!
Why is organic food better?
- Fewer pesticides: Organic food has strict requirements regarding the use of fertilizers and pesticides. These pesticides can have a negative impact on your health and the environment.
- More nutrients: Organic foods often contain more nutrients than conventional foods. This is because the crops are grown in a natural way, without the use of artificial fertilizers or chemical pesticides (GMO-free).
- Better for the environment: Not using chemical pesticides and fertilizers also has a very positive effect on the environment and your health!
- Animal welfare: Organic animals have more space and are fed and kept in a natural way, without being exposed to antibiotics or growth hormones. This has a positive effect on the health of the animal and ensures better quality meat or dairy.
How can you recognize organic food?
Organic food is very easy to recognize by the European organic quality mark. This quality mark indicates that the product meets strict European requirements. The EU organic label looks like this (see image) it is a green rectangle containing a leaf made of EU stars.
The reason we have chosen the organic label is because of the transparency it offers to the consumer. In this way we contribute to the transparency of the current food industry and we help consumers to make the right choice faster.
How is the organic label guaranteed?
Each European country has its own body for issuing and enforcing the EU organic label. In the Netherlands this is the SKAL – bio control . Every year, companies with an EU organic certificate are checked again by means of an audit.
It is of course dependent on the business activities how this audit works.
Conclusion
Organic products are not processed and free of artificial fertilizers and chemical pesticides. Which has many benefits with regard to our health, animal welfare and the environment. European organic products can be recognized by the green EU organic quality mark.
Do you want to contribute to animals, the environment and your health? Then choose organic products more often!
